Gainesville Neighborhoods
The City of Gainesville and Alachua County is based on the grid system of laying out streets. I have to admit when telling people this who have driven around the area, I can get a few laughs. The system is not perfect. You will find streets and avenues that should be NW but are south of Newberry Road. So take it with a grain of salt and make sure you have good directions when looking for houses in Gainesville.
Back to the grid, the area is divided into four quadrants: NW, NE, SE and SW. I have lived in three of these and each has its strengths and weaknesses. But if you are like most people you will buy a house based on the proximity to work, school zoning or some other factor that is important to you. It might help too to know that generally speaking Streets, Roads, Terraces, Drives, run North or South and Avenues, Boulevards and Places run East or West. I swear there are a few examples where rules don't seem to apply like Ways and Lanes. Courts and Circles typically make a loop or have two or more entrances. So, yeah a little confusing.
My purpose here was to provide some background information on area neighborhoods around Gainesville. If you have any questions or corrections, please send me an e-mail. Please be patient as building these pages will take time. But I am always up for suggestions.
